Sports in Puerto Vallarta

When it comes to sporting events, Puerto Vallarta rules the roost in Mexico’s tourist destinations with a huge variety of outdoor organized team and one-on-one sports competitions and matches to chose from.

Puerto Vallarta’s “reel” action

Topping the list of longest running recurring events is Puerto Vallarta sport fishing derby, the Annual Sailfish and Marlin Tournament, entering its 50th season in November. Anglers from around the world descend upon Banderas Bay in search of snaring the top elusive “big game fish” that would win them top prize.

Going head to head in Puerto Vallarta

Another favorite Puerto Vallarta sports event that takes place each May is the International Sports Classic bringing together global athletes – even ex-professional and Olympic players – competing in seven sports, including basketball, tennis, golf and softball. Aerobics takes place in the open air by Los Arcos monument on the Malecón promenade.

Grab your clubs and hit the greens

There are now seven stunning and challenging Puerto Vallarta golf courses to keep players on their toes, featuring designs by legends such as Tom Weiskopf, Jack Nicklaus and Robert Von Hagge. Golf tournaments with hefty prizes abound throughout the year but the biggest draws are the Vallarta Cup and the Nation’s Cup played at El Tigre, which sends the top three teams to the World Cup.

Why all the racket?

It’s a “love match” for tennis enthusiasts who seek the fun and excitement of the rapid paced racket sport. Players seeking fierce competition can enter the annual Canto del Sol Tennis Club Pro-Am tournament, now in its 25th year, and a number of smaller competitions held throughout the year at this Puerto Vallarta tennis club.

Other Puerto Vallarta sports include soccer, softball, marathons and martial arts, kickboxing, Muy Thai and boxing.
